What's New in LDAP Administrator 2009.2

Softerra LDAP Administrator 2009.2 is a major update that introduces several new features and improvements.

LDIF Editor .  LDIF Editor, the main feature introduced in this release, is a text editor for LDIF files. With this tool, you can now use LDAP Administrator to view and edit LDIF documents. It offers the following features:

  • Syntax Highlighting

  • IntelliSense

  • Text Outlining

  • Quick Navigation

  • BASE64 support

  • Passwords Editing

  • RFC2849 and RFC4525 support

  • LDIF Tree View

Quick Search Enhancements .  It's now possible to add Quick Search result items to the Basket or remove corresponding entries from the server using the Remove command.

Printing Support .  Print Preview and Print features are now supported in HTML Pane and LDIF Editor.

Clear Auto-Saved Data Dialog .  A tool to clear search and auto-complete history.

What's New in LDAP Administrator 2009.1

Softerra LDAP Administrator 2009.1 is a major update that introduces several new features and improvements.

Window Menu .  The Window menu allows users to manage stage of floating windows and to control the visibility of application’s modeless dialogs and property pages.

Modeless Monitor Dialog .  The Server Monitor dialog is now modeless just as Directory Search and Schema Viewer are. Modelessness allows to monitor the server state and perform other operations at the same time.

Value Processors in Exported Data .  While displaying data in List View, LDAP Administrator transforms some well-known encoded or binary data into a human-readable form. Now LDAP Administrator decodes such values while exporting or saving directory data to Excel, CSV, HTML or Text format.

Search History .  Every time you run a search, the application remembers all parameters applied and the time when it was executed. Later on, you can view all searches run previously and re-run them at any time again.

Server's SSL Certificate Viewer .  Sometimes it is necessary to know what SSL certificate was chosen during negotiation between LDAP Administrator and an LDAP Server. You can click the lock icon on the right-hand bottom corner to see the properties of an SSL certificate currently being used.

Active Directory Enhancements . 

  • The following attribute decoders have been added: userParameters, logonHours, machineRole, lockoutTime. Several old attribute decoders have been updated according to the latest MSDN documentation.

  • Now LDAP Administrator is fully aware of Active Directory schema specific properties that can be viewed with Schema Viewer.

Copy as LDAP Filter .  An attribute value can be copied to the Clipboard as LDAP Filter string. This accelerates and facilitates the use of Directory Search.

Memory Consumption Reduced .  The most often used strings such as attribute names now are stored in a string pool, which saves 10-15% of memory comparing to the previous version.

Schema Viewer Drag-n-Drop Support .  Attributes can be drag-n-dropped from Scope Pane and List View pane onto Schema Viewer to see their properties.

Docking and modeless windows now remember their size and state after application restart.

What's New in LDAP Administrator 2008.1

Softerra LDAP Administrator 2008 introduces a wide variety of new features and improvements with the most important shown below.

User Interface

User Interface Style Refresh.  Now the application has friendly-looking icons, improved color palette, neat menus and more flexible customization options. Some toolbars and context menus have been reorganized to make the user interface more intuitive.

Modeless Windows.  All major dialogs, frequently used windows and all property pages are now modeless, which allows working with the application without having to close them.

Docking Windows.  Docking windows are useful for personalizing the application layout or arranging multiple open windows into logical groups.

Basket.  A virtual container designed to allow batch modification of multiple LDAP entries from different locations, including different LDAP servers.

Browse DN Dialog.  A dialog that allows choosing DNs by visually navigating through the directory tree instead of typing it manually.

Enhanced List View.  A new feature has been developed allowing you to add custom columns containing attribute values to the List View. From now, you can also perform search within the List View pane using a new and handy filtering feature.

Context Sensitivity.  The user interface has become sensitive to the current LDAP server, which allows showing only those commands that can be applied to this server type. Some LDAP server-specific features have been implemented.

Managing Directory

Directory Search.  The dialog has been significantly changed and now offers the following new features:

  • The dialog is now modeless and can be docked to any area of the application.
  • Several instances of the dialog can be opened, an instance for each LDAP server you work with.
  • Any operation like Export Data, Multiple Modification, Delete, etc. can be performed directly on your search result.
  • The selection of search attributes became more effortless, the edit box of search attributes includes intellisense, drag-and-drop and embedded button, which provides an easy way of adding attributes defined by the LDAP schema.
  • You are allowed to specify additional search attributes after a search is complete.
  • Filtering of search results by a keyword or/and wildcard is available.

Attribute Value References.  A new handy feature that allows values of one attribute to dynamically include other when creating LDAP entries from entry templates or when modifying them with the help of the Add or Modify Attribute and Multiple Modification wizards.

Multiple Modifications.  The new Multiple Modification wizard has been developed to ensure an easy way for users who work collectively with several LDAP entries from various LDAP servers. Now you can apply multiple modifications to different entries at once with the help of the Multiple Modification wizard. Now, while performing such updates, you can use attribute value references.

Attribute Creation.  The Attribute Modification Wizard has been improved. Now it allows adding or modifying attributes of several selected LDAP entries. While performing such updates, you can use attribute value references.

Entry Templates.  The support of attribute value references has been added to entry templates thus allowing attribute values to contain values of another attributes while creating entries.

Advanced Copy.  You can copy LDAP entries to the clipboard as DNs, LDAP URLs, LDIF or DSML documents by using Advanced Copy button.

Active Directory Application Partitions Management.  A tool for creating, removing or managing replication of Active Directory or ADAM application partitions.

Miscellaneous

Modern LDAP Server Support.  Various compatibility issues have been addressed to support modern LDAP servers like Sun OpenDS, Apache Directory Server, Novell eDirectory 8.8, OpenLDAP 2.4 and Active Directory 2008.

Windows Vista support.  Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 experience has been significantly improved.

64-bit Version.  If you work with a 64-bit operation system you can fully reveal its power by using the 64-bit version of Softerra LDAP Administrator.

Persistent settings.  All LDAP entries and referral settings like filter, displayed attributes, paging policy etc. are persistent and remain unchanged after the application restart.

Load/Save Configuration.  Now it is possible to backup and restore all the application configuration settings.

Kerberos Based Data Encryption.  Active Directory users can use LDAP traffic encyption without having to use SSL.
