LDIF & BASE64 Encoded Information

Postby andrews » Mon Jun 21, 2004 11:43 pm

I have noticed a few posts that make reference to LDIF producing BASE64 encoded data for values.
The rules for LDIF require values that contain (amongst other things) a CR or LF must be BASE64 encoded.

I found that XML encoded information often contains CR and LF characters. I felt that it was a shame that the XML encoded data could not be displayed in its textual representation in LDIF.

So, I just wanted to make people aware of an IETF Internet Draft, which I have created, called Extended LDIF. http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-sciberras-xed-eldif-02.txt
ELDIF provides an ability to display XML encoded information in its textual format instead of its BASE64 representation in an LDIF file.

I think that this would be a great feature to put on a wishlist if others are interested.

Thank you for the information. We've added ELDIF to our TODO list. I think we'll introduce it after version 3.2.
