Managing Entry Templates

As you are getting more and more involved using LDAP Administrator as your working tool, your list of entry templates will keep growing in size, so you may quite naturally want to keep them well organized by using the Entry Template Manager. To launch the manager, select a profile whose templates you'd like to organize, and click Template Manager on the Entry toolbar.

With the Entry Template Manager, you can edit, delete, reorder, import and export your templates. Editing an entry template usually means changing any of its parameters, or moving it between the Shared or Profile Specific groups.

Import Entry Templates

LDAP Administrator provides for importing entry templates from a file.

Entry templates are stored in files with the ETX format, which defines a vocabulary and schema for describing entry templates in an XML document. To edit .etx files, use a text editor of any sort. However, the LTM format introduced by LDAP Administrator v.2, is also supported for compatibility purposes.

There are two ways to import entry templates. They are:

  1. In the Entry Template Manager, click Import.

  2. Select a destination profile for your imported templates, and on the File menu, click Import Templates.

This will display the Import Entry Templates dialog. Using this dialog, locate an .etx or .ltm file you're looking to import templates from. If unwilling to import all the templates from a specified file, select just the ones required from the list of templates on the dialog's right. To see template details, select one in the list and click View Details.

The name of template being imported will be changed automatically if there's already a template with the same name in your storage.

Export Entry Templates

It is often required to store some entry templates in a file for further use. So, in order to exchange templates with other LDAP users, or to back them up so they remain available after you reinstall the application, or to use them on another PC, you can export them to a file by using the Export Templates Wizard.

There are two ways how the Export Templates Wizard can be launched. They are:

  1. In the Entry Template Manager, select templates for export and click Export.

  2. Select a source profile you're looking to export templates from, and click Export Templates in the File menu.

If launched from the File menu, the Templates Export Wizard will start at Step One for you to select templates to export. But, in case it's been activated from the Entry Template Manager, the wizard will start from Step Two assuming you already have one or more templates selected for export. At Step Two name a file you export your templates to and click Finish.
